What is Driveway Sealing in Bournemouth & Poole?
First things first, and to be honest most sealing pages won't say it. You don't have to seal your drive. For a lot of drives a proper clean and a re-sand of the joints is enough, and they'll look great without paying for a seal on top. So before anything else, we'll tell you straight whether yours is worth sealing or whether you'd be spending money you don't need to.
When it is worth it, here's what a seal actually does. It brings the colour back up so the drive looks fresh, not faded. It helps hold the kiln-dried sand in the joints so it doesn't wash out as fast. And it gives the surface a bit of protection against oil, stains, weeds and the weather. On the right drive that's a real difference. On the wrong one it's money for nothing, which is why we look first.
One thing worth clearing up. This is sealing for UK drives, block paving, concrete, imprinted or pattern concrete, and resin. It is not the black American 'sealcoat' you'll find all over the internet, which is for tarmac and asphalt roads. If your search threw up videos of someone painting a black coat over a drive, that's a different thing for a different surface. What we do is a clear or colour-enhancing sealer that soaks into a paved or resin drive, not a black coat over the top.
Which surfaces we'll seal: block paving, plain and imprinted or pattern concrete, and resin with the right care. Block paving is the one that benefits most, because the seal locks the joint sand in after a re-sand. Resin gets a soft, careful approach so nothing is harmed. Gravel we can't seal, it simply wouldn't be possible. If we don't think your surface needs it or suits it, we'll say so.
Sealing only ever goes on a drive that's been properly cleaned, dried and re-sanded first. Seal a damp or dirty drive and you trap the dirt and moisture underneath, which is worse than not sealing at all. So the order matters. We clean it, re-sand the joints, let it dry, then seal. Every job is fully insured with £1 million public liability, we treat every property as if it were our own, and you only pay once the job's done.

How It Works
Clean it first, matched to the surface
Sealing never goes on a dirty drive, so the clean comes first. Block paving and concrete take a rotary clean. A resin or delicate drive gets a soft wash instead, decided before we get to the job from your photos, so nothing is damaged. We lift off the dirt, get into the joints and edges, and rinse it down.
Re-sand the joints
On block paving we brush kiln-dried sand back into the joints so the blocks lock together and stay put. The seal then helps hold that sand in, which is one of the main reasons it's worth doing on a paved drive.
Let it dry properly
The drive has to be dry before any seal goes on. Seal a damp surface and you trap moisture underneath, which is worse than not sealing at all. So we wait for the right conditions rather than rush it.
Apply the seal, then leave it to cure
We apply the seal evenly so the colour comes up and the surface and joints are protected. Then we check it over, tidy up and leave it to cure. You only pay once it's done.

Is sealing your driveway worth it?
Sometimes, not always, and we'd rather tell you straight. A seal brings the colour up, helps hold the joint sand in and adds a bit of protection. But for plenty of drives a proper clean and re-sand on its own is enough, and you'd be paying for a seal you don't really need. We'll look at yours first and give you an honest answer either way.
Is this the same as the black American sealcoat I keep finding online?
No, and it's an easy thing to get confused by. The black 'sealcoat' you see online is for tarmac and asphalt roads, mostly American. What we do is a clear or colour-enhancing sealer for UK drives, block paving, concrete, imprinted concrete and resin. It soaks into a paved or resin drive rather than being painted black over the top.
How much does driveway sealing cost?
Sealing is £3/m². It goes on after a clean at £3.50/m² and a re-sand at £2/m², and doing all three in one visit works out cheaper than coming back for it later. Send us a photo of your drive and your rough size and we'll give you the exact price before we come out. You only pay once it's done.
Which drive surfaces can be sealed?
Block paving, plain concrete, imprinted or pattern concrete, and resin with the right care. Block paving benefits most because the seal locks the joint sand in after a re-sand. Gravel can't be sealed, it simply wouldn't be possible. If your surface doesn't need it or suit it, we'll say so rather than seal it for the sake of it.
Can I just seal the driveway myself?
You can, but it's easy to get wrong. The drive has to be properly cleaned, re-sanded and fully dry first, and the seal has to go on even, or you get patches and trapped moisture. Most of the jobs that go wrong are down to sealing a drive that wasn't prepped right. That's why we clean, re-sand and seal as one job rather than just the seal on its own.
Are there any downsides to sealing?
A couple worth knowing. It costs more than a clean alone, and a seal doesn't last forever, so it needs redoing every few years to keep the protection. And if a drive is sealed while it's still damp or dirty, it traps the dirt and moisture underneath, which is worse than not sealing. That's why we only ever seal a properly cleaned, dry, re-sanded drive.
How often does a sealed driveway need redoing?
It depends on the sealer, the surface and how much traffic the drive gets, but a seal is something you top up every few years rather than a one-off. When it starts to wear, a fresh clean and re-seal brings it back. We'll let you know roughly what to expect for your drive when we quote it.
Will it give a wet look, and will it get slippery?
A seal does bring the colour up, so the drive can look a little richer or wetter than before. How much depends on the surface and the finish. We'll tell you what to expect on your drive before we start so there are no surprises, and we won't leave you with a finish you didn't want.
Do you clean and re-sand the drive before sealing it?
Always. Sealing only works on a drive that's been properly cleaned, dried and re-sanded first. We do the lot as one job. Clean, re-sand the joints, let it dry, then seal. That's the only way it goes on properly and lasts.
