What is Patio Sealing in Bournemouth & Poole?
Every sealing page online is trying to sell you sealing. We'd rather tell you straight. A seal goes on after the clean and brings the colour up, gives a wet-look or a more natural matt finish if you want it, and helps the surface shrug off oil, stains and weather for longer. But plenty of patios are fine with just a proper clean and a re-sand. If yours is one of them, we'll say so rather than talk you into something you don't need.
When is it worth it? If your patio is a porous natural stone that drinks in stains, if it sits under trees or catches a lot of weather, or if you simply want the colour kept rich and the finish protected, a seal earns its place. Indian sandstone, limestone, other natural stone, concrete slabs and block paving all take a seal well and benefit from it.
When is it not? Porcelain barely needs sealing, as it's already dense and non-porous, so we won't seal it just to add a line to the bill. And if your patio only needs freshening up, a clean and re-sand on its own will do the job. Sealing is the finish, not a fix.
The one rule that matters is this. A seal only goes on a patio that's been properly cleaned, dried out and re-sanded first. Seal it while it's damp or too soon and you trap moisture under the surface, which is exactly how sealing gets a bad name. That's why we do the clean and the seal as one job where it makes sense, so the surface is right before anything goes on it.

How It Works
Clean it back properly first
A seal is only as good as the surface underneath it. So the patio gets cleaned first, the right pressure matched to the stone, the dirt lifted off and bagged up. Seal over dirt and you simply lock the dirt in.
Let it dry out
This is the step people rush. A seal goes on a dry surface, not a damp one. Seal it too soon and you trap moisture underneath, which is how a bad seal job happens. So we let it dry out properly before we go anywhere near it.
Re-sand the joints
On block paving and jointed patios we brush kiln-dried sand back into the joints so the surface is sound and the blocks lock together. The seal then helps hold that sand in place.
Seal it and check the finish
We apply the seal evenly, wet-look or matt depending on what you're after, so the colour comes up and the surface is protected. Then we check it over, give it a final rinse where needed, and leave it to cure. You pay once it's done.

Is sealing a patio worth it?
Sometimes, not always. A seal brings the colour up and helps the finish last, and it earns its place on porous natural stone or a patio that catches a lot of weather. But plenty of patios are perfectly fine with just a clean and a re-sand. We'll tell you straight whether yours is worth sealing rather than push it on you.
Does a patio need sealing?
Not as a rule. Sealing is a finish, not a fix. It helps on porous stone and where you want the colour kept rich, but it isn't essential. Some patios, porcelain especially, barely need it at all. If a clean and re-sand will do the job for you, that's what we'll recommend.
What are the disadvantages of sealing?
Honestly, there are a few worth knowing. It costs more, it has to be redone every few years, and if it's put on while the surface is damp or too soon after cleaning it can trap moisture underneath, which causes problems. That last one is why we always clean, dry and re-sand the patio properly before any seal goes on. Done right, none of those are an issue.
How much does it cost to clean and seal a patio?
Cleaning is £3.50/m² and sealing is £3/m², with a re-sand at £2/m² where the joints need it. Having it cleaned and sealed in one visit is the sensible way to do it, because the seal has to go on a freshly cleaned, dry surface anyway. Wet look or matt, and will it change the colour?
You can have either. A wet-look seal deepens and richens the colour, like the patio's just been rained on. A matt or natural seal protects it without changing the look much. It won't change the colour wrongly, it just brings out what's already there. Tell us which you're after and we'll match the seal to it.
Will a sealed patio be slippery?
A good seal shouldn't leave it dangerous. The wetter, glossier finishes can be a touch more slick when wet, so if you've got steps or a slope we'll talk you through a lower-sheen or non-slip option. It's the kind of thing we'd rather sort before sealing than have you find out after.
How long does patio sealing last and how often do I reseal?
As a rough guide a few years, depending on the stone, the weather it takes and how much the patio gets used. It wears gradually rather than failing all at once. When the colour starts to dull and water stops beading on it, that's the sign it's due a fresh coat.
